Dr Geoffrey Cohn OAM graduated with a combined Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Chemistry from the University of the Witwatrsrand in South Africa in 1974. He was subsequently elected as a Fellow to the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) in 1981 and has an extensive interest in foreign aid projects in developing countries . Dr Cohn is currently the chairman of the RANZCO Foreign Aid Committee having held this position within the college since 2004. He has also been a lecturer to the University of NSW, School of Medicine, since 1985 and has a keen interest in dry eye conditions and corneal problems.
In the last 20 years Dr Cohn’s international projects have seen him establish many teaching posts in Myanmar (formerly Burma), India, Bali and Cambodia that aims to improve the expertise of local ophthalmologists . One of the more recent accomplishments has been the establishment of the “Bright Light of Mount Popa”, Ophthalmic Technician Training Centre at Mount Popa via Kyaukpadaung, Myanmar. At present 23 students from 4 centers are in training, Australian expertise is superimposed on the knowledge and expertise of the resident staff.
In 2010 Dr Cohn was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to ophthalmology, and to overseas aid programs fostering improved eye-health services.
